Torrid love was painter Francis Bacon's muse
by Dawn Leach
Cleveland-In the 1960s, a man tried to break into the London home of renowned painter Francis Bacon. When the burglar fell through the ceiling, the inauspicious meeting between the two men became the start of a torrid love affair. George Dyer moved in with Bacon and became his primary model.
"I think Dyer had his problems before
Daniel Craig as George Dyer
they met, but meeting Bacon simply aggravated things," said British writer John Maybury, who directed the film Love is the Devil: A Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon. "He may have just continued a life of petty crime, but instead he's become one of the great icons of 20th-century art."
Love is the Devil depicts the life of Bacon, one of the most controversial artists of the 20th century, and his destructive relationship with Dyer.
Born in 1909 to a Dublin horse trainer,
Bacon ran away from home when his family found out he was having sex with the men who groomed his father's horses. He took up residence in London and became known as a painter after some of his paintings were displayed in a 1944 exhibition there. His paintings have been described as disturbing, and are characterized by themes of violence and disintegration.
It was during his relationship with Dyer that Bacon created his best work and beSTRAND RELEASING came very popular in
the chic art scene. Among these paintings is Triptych August 1972, portraying Dyer's death by drug overdose.
"The dynamic between the artist and his muse and the choices that an artist has to make between his work and his private life are what I find fascinating," Maybury said.
Maybury never met Bacon, who died in 1992, but he socialized in some of the same circles. Maybury spent two years questioning Bacon's friends and researching his life in order to make a film
about Bacon, who he
looked to as an idol. "I wanted to create atmosphere, not historical detail," Maybury said. “What interests me most about Bacon's life are the paintings of Dyer."
Maybury will attend the U.S. premiere of the film in Cleveland and will discuss the making of the film after the showing. ✔
Love is the Devil will premiere at the Cleveland Cinematheque, 11141 East Blvd. in Cleveland's University Circle, at 8:45 pm on September 26. For ticket information, call 216-421-7450.
